CABLE NEWS

(United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.)

CANADA AND AUSTRALIA QUESTION OF PREFERENCE. (Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) OTTAWA, January 27. In the House of Commons, Mr Ames initiated a discussion on. .the question of the trade of the Empire. Hte declllared that Canada had given (preference to Britain as far as she could. The next move must come from the Motherland. ''When, she is ready to grant advantages," said the speaker, "we are willing to grant even more." 3>i sous-sing the question of preferential trade with Australia, Mr Aimes declared that there were already many Australia-n exports admitted free, but if they could:, they would give preference to butter, fruit, feather, meat and tallow, as well as the advantages accorded under the French Treaty in connection with light wines, prunes, raisins and currants. This would be an attractive offer. Mir Foster said he did not wish to ask for preference for preference, but he pointed out that few of the articles on which Australia and Britain gave preference benefited Canada. He hoped to arrange a conference with Australia. Sir Wilfrid Launer suggested that Mr Foster should go to Australia and endeavour to arrange a treaty.
