THE LABOUR PARTY

A RUMOURED DISTURBANCE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.J WAXGANTJI, Last Nigjit. Rumours have been going the rounds lately of some disturbance in the minds of the local Labour Party, and of the possibility of interesting developments, particularly in regard to its relation to the New Zealand Labour Party.

From statements made to a pressman by leading Labourites in Wanganui, it appears that strong excej>tion is taken to the hostile attitude adopted by the executive of the New Zealand party, and its official organ in Wellington, towards the members for Wartganui, Otaki and Grey Lynn. Messrs Ye itch, 'Robertson and Payne did not sign the New Zealand Labour Party's written pledge, nor were they asked to do so, their supporters, it is said, preferring to trust to their personal honour.

The fact that the three members named, "are also opposed to the Premier is stated to be another of tlie .Executive's grievances.

It transpires that an attempt was made by the Executive in Wellington, prior to the elections, to force :a pledge on Mr Ye itch, but it failed, and this ,as well as the attitude of the New Zealand Party's official organ, have ■caused so much resentment that already there is talk of starting a new political Labour movement, the 'constitution of which shall leave out all mention, of'a pledge, and will give local branches a freer hand in the selection of candidates and the conduct of elections.

The local Labour opinion is that the | constitution.of the New Zealand Lab- j our •Party tends'.to tlie* creation off n political machine, with a select few in Wellington exercising the right of. dictation to the whole party throughout the Dominion; and this they are determined to resent. It is stated that communications already received here from other parts of the Dominion express a similar opinion, and indicate a readiness to join in the suggested new movement which, while putting forward a thoroughly Labour platform, shall ensure I freedom from dominance by a narrow coterie of extremists.

Further developments are being awaited with interest.
