[ The. annual open championship' meeting * and handicap tournament was continued on tJixe Masterton Club's courts yesterday. Tho weather was, if anything, a little too hot, but the courts played well. The arrange* ments were in good order, and the matches were got off an good time. Pearse put up a good fight against Ollivier in the semi-final or the championship singles. The first set went to Ollivier fairly easy, tout in the second set'Pearse was leading 4 ltd 1 at one stage. Aitken put up a good fight in the final. Ollivier started by, winning five games taone after which Aitken pulled "off three before the dhamjjion won the set. In the second set Aitken won the first, fourth and sixth games. The winner's serving and. placing was mainly responsible for his success.
The men's championship doubles reQuired three matches to complete the competition. Ollivier and Ouff easily defeated Varton and Soundy. The latter each won one game on t-heir own service, but drew out at this stage. Aitken and.Pearse surprised the onlookers by beating Ollivier and Cuff. The winners gave Cuff a lot of work t-o do. Ollivier did not plav as usual, apparently being tired after his other games. , Miss Williaiiis beat.Miss. Booth alter a- good game in the ladies' championship singles. Miss Booth won the first two games, and then-Miss Williams followed by winning six game® on end. The other games were won alternately-after some good rallies. Miss Hartgill easily defeated Miss ' Welhvood., Miss Hartgill, and' Miss Williams gave a. great exhibition in the final . The scores do not in any way indicate the respective positions of the players._ Most of the games were won by very little to spare after lon$» rallies. Both ladies have an excellent serve, and they play' at the back of the court, getting drive after drive before one tails. Pearse. as usual, worked hard all over the fourt. Ollivier and Miss Hartgill easily won against. Stainton . and .Miss- Irwin. Aitken and Miss Cave fought doggedly against Ollivier and Miss Hartgill in the final, but the latters' superiority was proved.: In the first setthe losers won the second, sixth and eighth games, and in the second the first, fourth and fifth games. ; • < Cuff won by default from Bowen . in the .third round-of the A. grade men's handicap singles, and then won ; a good game against BoydhdusQ in the semi-final. Varton also won'in the semi-final against, Blundell. . -The latter was a very slow game, being a series of soft, lobs. The final was a little more lively. Cuff got his win by good all round play. There were no ' verv brilliant r ' matches in the preliminary of the il grade of. the men's handicap, singles. Reed aitd Holdswbrt'h easily got into' the fiftals. It , * was hardly expected that Reed, would t make un the h&ndicap.,and.beat. Holdsworth in the He stari. .1 badly, but recovered himself and tfot a win by a very narrow inargin. The final in t-lie A. grade of the men's handicap doubles remains to be played between J. L. Bhindell and A. T. Spain and :8. R. Gawith and J. : Martiln
Boddrngftni and Pavitt played a strenuous game againsit . Mackersey And Reed in the second round of the men's handicap doubles. Both: sides started off scratch, and the former only succeeded in. winning by five points. The two younger players put 'up a good performance. The winners meet Campbell and Tliynne in the final. The closest match in the ladies' handicap singles was that in which Miss Oave beat Miss Booth. Miss Booth played a hard game, but her shots were persistently returned by Miss Cave. Miss R. Hughes beat Miss Wiggins in the semi-final fairly easily. Miss L. D. Hughes ; romped home against Miss Cave. In the final Miss R. Hughes scratched to her sister. Misses Godfrey and Irwin only succeeded ip beating the Misses Perrr in the semi-final of the ladies' doubles by eight points. Misses Payton and Hughes have to play Misses Williams and Hart trill in the semifinal, and the wirmers meet Misses Godfrey and Trwin. Ollivier and Miss Hartgill easily got into the semi-final of the combined handicap doubles, as also did Aitken and Miss Cave. Boddinnton and Miss Payton and Varton and Miss Hughes had to work hard to reach the same stage. Ollivier and Miss Hart-
