THE MASTEIITON TOURNAMENT. CONTINUED YESTERDAY. offi «ifs—President7very Rev. Dean Mc&enna; vice-presidents, Messrs ■N. D. Bunting and D. Oaselberg: general committee, Messrs G. G. Aztken S. A. Noble-Campbell, J. V. Gordon , N. H. James and H. a. -Favitt; iiandicappers, mound and match committee, Messrs G. G. Aitken, H. M. Boddington, N. H.James-and A. R. Sclanders: referee, Very Rev. Dean McKenna; ion. treasurer, Mr A R Sclanders; ihon. secretary, Mr Hw M. Boddington. .

The J&wri tennis tournament was continued on tlie Masterton Club's Courts yesterday in delightful weather. The courts were in excellent order, for wliicli credit is due to the caretaker (Mr F. P. Treader). Tho Secretary (Mr H. M. Boddington) was kept busy seeing that all the courts *were continually occupied; All the players were in particularly good form.

I, The..niatch. between. Sclanders and Hartgil] in the' Championship singles I was easily the best match of the inorning, ; The game produced soine> good tennis. Both players indulged m some hard jbittingi driving to tie back of the courtfirequeutry. The most* keenly contested match in the second round was between Reed and -Page. The first set required t'hree extra games, and the second >seveu extra. Thynne succeeded in getting into the semi-final, but the local champion tihen put a stop to his progress. Ollivier and Pearse are still left in the semi-final, and the winner meets Ait* ken in the final. The match between G. Ollivier andi. O. A. Cuff and H. H. Godfrey and W. H. Stainton ini the championship doubles was a very attractive one. The former gave a good display, repeatedly getting returns itxrthe back of the court.' Another close'game was contested between E. M. Mackersey and R. W. Reed and G. Mawley and N: H. James, both sets being won by two games only. Varton and Soundy created a surprise by getting in on Sclanders: and JElcoate-by 6—2, The latter pair did not play tip* to their usual form. Tiie winners however, were outed in the semi-final by Ollivier and Cuff. One. more match.' is still to be played in the seconds, round before the semi-final are started. ■■ •

A very interesting match in the ladies' championship singles was thiatl between Miss Hartgill and Miss Hughes. Miss Hughes played a good A game,; and; ; long ; raffiestrfesultedv'; Miss?" Cave- prayed'-,. ■feet:-usual.steadyxgaiitje.; :Willian>s. The.latter r very good ottv il&ibQcidhattdi idiiye;,ajnj(| -: her short volleys'-were ateftjfery^use- J ful. Miss Hartgill easjfti defeafbed Miss Irwin. The senH-fifl|gE; .gre - >be- i tween. Mks Booth and MMJgfeliams, and Miss Hartgill and. Miss TreVwood* The winers will meet in the final.

Misses M. Payton and B. Hughes played the first match in the championship doubles against Misses B. and D. Booth/ The game was more even than the scopes indicate, and some good.rallies resulted. In' the same round a great contest was played between Miss S. Bolton and Mies D. WeHwood, and Miss M. Godfrey and Miss Mi'lrwin". All the~players>had a good, variety of strokes, and played a fast game. The most brilliant game in this championship, was, however, ■the one in which* Misses Wiflirms and Hartgill beat the Misses Vnghes. Both, of, the winners gamed t/.r their own serves: Miss Williams ;r■ ■■•<s a good exhibition of short volleying, while Miss Hartgill stopped hack and got in some good long drives. Ths Misses Hughes are deserving of the highest praise for the way m which they stood lip against the champions. The combined championship doubles section was got well forward. A keen battle was fought o\tt by W. H. Btainton and Miss Irwin, and Martin and-Miss Cameron. Ollivier and Miss Hartgilt.and.Aitken and' Miss.-Cave have played into the semi-finals." Two games are yet to bat played in the second round.

Only one game of note resulted in the first round of the men's handicap singles, and that wnnjbetweeh James and Martin. Martin "made lip th* start, but James drew out .at the ]a*L Tllie winner was most effective with his long .forehand drives. ■• Vartort played well against Sclanders, and 1 " deserved' his win. Ouff, Bowen, and Sotmdy have also played the third round. There are three matches to complete the second round. Mackersey only succeeded in de»feating Gaselberg by four points ; after a hard game in the B grade or the men's. handicap singles. Chamberlain, Lewis, Gawitih, .Hand-Newtort, Beed, Cook aid Lo\v a)L succeeded in getting into the third round. Only one match has been played m th» semi-final, leaving three'jnore. Hartgill *hd Groves had* a strenuous task to defeat Oarlyon and Stainton in the men's handicap singles. The latter had a start of five, and it was only by hard work that the winners caught up. Maivley and James had very little trouble in beating Booth and Steele. Hartgill and Groves were outed in the second rou-wd by Oaselberg and Moodie. P«krae and Ouff (the scratch men) wese defeated in the second round by Blundel and Spain. P. J. and C. I>avie have yet to meet G. Mawley andN. H. James in the second round. S. R. Gawith and J. Martin are amongst those in the semi-finals. The closest match in the B. grade men's handicap doubles was l)etween N. F. Chamberlain and A. H. Magson and O. Hay and H. J. Francis. The competitors were well balanced y and put up a creditable display. Boddington ami Pavitt are to play Mackersey and Reed in the second round, and the winners play Ohamberlaia and Mag son. The winners of the latter will meet- Campbell and Tliynne. in the final. Miss D. Booth did well to catch up on Miss F. Perry and heat her by ten in the ladies' handicap singles. The other rmitehes were uninteresting. A large number have still t« bo played. There was a good series of matches in the first, round of the Indies' handicap doubles. All were very close, and some good games are expected in the semi-finals. Misses G. and D. Booth meet Misses Godfrey and. Irwin in the

second round. I'our pairs will remain •in the semi-unals. m T,e combined handicap doubles aso D ,.,ih„,. { | M)ino keen mati'hcs.
