JERUSALEM.
The possibility of the ~ Italians demanding the cessation .of Jerusalem and tlie Holy Land, as indemnification, for the expense incurred in the wlar with' Turkey over Tripoli, is ■.being, discussed in .Jewish.' papers in various parts of the world. It is stated that the Holy Land will be presented to tlie Pope, thus restoring' ito him temporal power. This would mean that for the first time since the days of the Crusaders the cross would replace the crescent in tlie land imost sacred to those professing the Ohlristiaai religion. There are 50,000 Jews in Jerusalem, and these are naturally alarmed at the prospect of a papal'rule. On the other hand, many Roman Catholics think that the prospect of the Pope deserting Rome is in the region of wild improbability.
