TERRIFIC GALE.
DEVASTATION IN BRITAIN. NUMEROUS WRECKS REPORTED. (Received January 19, 8.5 a.m.) LONDON, January 18. A terrific gale prevails m Britain. Numerous fatalities are reported, and there is much damage to harbour works and shipping. A German steamer was wrecked onr the Goodwin, Sands. The Ramsgate lifeboat gallantly rescued twenty of the crew. A large unknown steamer was seen to turn ibutt'tlo and founder near Petershead ; but the terrific gale made it impossible to help the crew.. Other wrecks are reported from all parts of the coast.
STEAMER WRECKED. (Received January 19, 1.10 p.m.) LONDON, January 18. A .lifeboat followed t-lie steamer Wistmv Hall for five hour®. The tide was like maelstrom and dashed the Wistow Hall on to the Buchan rocks. Four, including tho captain, were saved, and fifty-three, mostly Lascars, were drowned. HEAVY SNOWFALL. PUBLIC SERVICES DISORGANISED. (Received January 19. 10.10 a.m.) LONDON, January 18. The snowfall in tho midland 3 lasted 1 for thirty-six hours. Trains have been .seriously delayed. Tons of salt were used for thawir.g purposes. Tho weight of ice coating the wires in many localities dragged tho telegraph poles down. Fifteen thousand miners have been thrown idle at Connockchn.se owing to difficulty in moving rai].v:iy trucks.
