NELSON, Last Night

The shipwrecked crew of the Jane Douglas arrived at' Nelson hy tlhe Pateewa this morning. Captain Vendore states that the vessel was beating through, the Stirattts from Wellington to Hokitika. against a blustering south-easter. Boisterous weather continued on entering the passage between Stephen's and D'Urvillo Islands, where there were several rocks, tlie vessel piling up on fho Saddle Rock. Tiio captain declares that Steeple Rock and Saddle Rock are wrongly i chartered, the names being transposed. ■ At midnight the vessel was steam--1 ing beneath heavy clouds, all hands l being on deck. ' I At o'clock she struck and sank I in five minutes. I Despite the blackness there was no | panic among tho crew. The mate took charge of the boat, the captain staying aboard, the engines racing furiously. The hull listed and slid off the nocks as the deck came level with the decks. The captain grasped a lifebelt, but was sucked under for some depth. He came up ,'half drowned, clinging to a lifebelt, as 'ho was unable to swim. _ After a search a boat found Imm in a bad way, 'and a course was set for Port Hardy.- , n . After some difficulty a landing was affected and,the party, shoeless, and .half clad, tramped to Lord's homestead and received every kindness there. They were then taken to thee French Pas's in, a launch, and joined tho Pateena. Tlhe crew is in a hanless olight, some being coatless and shirtless.
