THE MAYORAL CHAIR.
A correspondent in this dasue states that the .intention of the framars of the Municipal Corporations Act was that the occupier of the Mayoral chair _ sflimikl attend chiefly to social functions. Whatever the intention of the fr aimers of the Act may have been, the occupier >of the Mayoral! dtoair has come to .be recognised, /at anyrate in New Zealand, as the business head, of the Council. That being so, at seen® a'bsurd that he should be elected annually, and that Ihe .slhould not have received a training in municipal matters. There woud appear to be no good reason why the 'Mayor should not be selected by the 'Borough Council, as as the case in 'Victoria. He would then, at anyirate, feel that li« had the confidence of 7ra,& oollieagues, as., well as of the burgesses.
