Bannister, of Masterton, will jaidsre dairy cattle, and Mr Bland Rayner Lincoln sheep. Mr P. Murray, wha lias l-/-Inspector at Jolmsoiiville for lire past twelve months, lias been promoted to Eltham. The condition of Mr W. W. McCardle, Mayor of Pahia'uvi,. who underwent an operation last week, Is occasioning ibis friends grave anxiety. The Hon. W. W. McCardle and Mrs McCardle have -arrived'>at Pahiatua.
The death is reported of Mrs D. Livingstone, of Taihape, after a surgical operation. She was the second daughter of Mr T. J. George, of Ota-k----eho, and "was for some years engaged in teaching at Hawera. and other schools. V
A well-known erstwhile sportsman died at Hawera a few days ago—Mr Thomas Rowe. Deceased was « colonist ox over fifty years standing. In the early days he owned a number of horses which figured prominently on the turf at different race meetings. One of them was True Blue, which won the Wanganui Cup in 1875. Opawa, another horso of Mr Rowe's, captured the same trophy the !vs.:lowing year. The deceased had resided m Hawera for a good many years, during the latter portion of his life being an invalid. He was 72 at the time of his death.
Farewell meetings were conducted in the Salvation. Army barracks in Masterton yesterday by Ensign and Mrs Avenell, who leave this week for Inglewood. The departing, officers havo made many friends in Masterton, who will wish them well in their now command.
A London cable announces the death of Mr Justice Cohen, of New South Wales, which occurred on hoard the (Steamer Frederick der Groose. Justice Coihen was returning from an extended •holiday in Europe. Tho Rev. A. M. Johnston, v :c;.yv of St. Mark's, Wellington, preached to a largo congregation in St. Matthew's Church, Masterton, last evening. His Excellency tho Governor and staff will go io.to camp at Rotorua on January ISJtih.
A meeting held at Bangiora on Wednesday night decided to entertain the Hon I). Buddo at a. complimentary social at an early date, and J;ivite Sir Joseph Ward, Sir James Carroll and the ei "i Canterbury members to he present'.
It is understood that Mr J. '.Brown, agricultural instructor to the South Canterbury. Board of Education, has been chosen to fill an important position in the Agricultural Department of South Australia. If Mr Brown accepts tho position he will leave Timaxu shortly to take up his new duties.
