In the mornrimg the soura tempera-tua-e reached 154 degrees', and this wa® accompanied jy a str»ng hot wind. Efcurly in the afternoon a thunderstorm lxroke, and rain, deluged the 'track. The riders donned weird protecting garments*, from oil skints to blankets. Some carried open umibrellas. Thie rain continuied all the after-, mooro, and the riding wa© very sfiow. Mian-y of the competitors 'became tmusolie-bound, necessitating cxxntiiil- - maasagiitng. ■Seventeen- liundired aind ten miles had been covered ~y 5 o'clock.
