THE TOTALISATOR.
Hie President of the New South Wales Totaliisator Commission, wfeosb is: vdeitnlng New ZeaJiand, has expressed surprise and disappointment that nobody has come forward to oppose the gambling system of tlhe Dominion. He is probably not aware that any person who raiises his voice in this free' and enM'ghtened community against the various forms of iniquity is immediately designated a "wowser," or some other reproarfuful tiling. Anytluing a.pproaclin'ing honest criticism of social cnistoms is barredi as irutoleiiant. Tlhe New South Wales Oommiissaon should be satisfied with the opinion expressed by Mr Howe, President of tine Auckland Trotting Association, that if a refea-endaiorn of the people of New Zealand were taken, boitli the . totalizator and the bookmaker woulidt be wiped out. Legisllatorjs in this democratic country, however, are not constructed oil "trust; the people" lines.
