CALEDONIAN SOCIETY

ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING.

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING

Peitiap® the largest and most successful gathering ever held in Mas-ter-ton was tie annual meeting of the Wairaiapa Caledonian Society on .the Park Oval yesterday. The weather was almost perfect, if anything, rather warm, and a large crowd took the opportunity to be present at the gathering, which is always increasing In popularity. The oval was in good condition for the pedestrian events, and other arrangements were, thanks to the energetic secretary (Mr W. Gillespie) and his willing band of stewards, all .-that could be desired, r> ■ d the events w ere, in consequence, ali got off well up to time, and without the slightest hitdh. The programme comprised pvents of every description, and the good trophies and prizes offered attracted record entries. The competitors in the running events were amorg the best of their class. The presence of R. Opie, the Australasian champion, added considerable inter-*I to the aanateur events. Unfortunately , however, he, after running second in his heat in tihe 220 yds, had to withdrew on account of a slight injury to his leg. Altihougjh no records were broken some very good times were registered. The big race of the day (the Caledonian handicap) was pulled off in fine style. The bagpipes gave the real Scotch tone to the function. A large' number of men and children appeared in Highland costume, and the piping and dancing competitions wer« very attractive. The competitors had increased in efficiency since the last sports and several new ones came forward. The judges had a difficult task to pick the winners in the various sections.

The feature of the day was the initial appearance of the new pipe band. The members assembled in the mornmorning and miardhed to tihe grounds playing tiheir pipes. At the lumiieon adjournment the band rendered selections wfhile marching round the oval, and were loudly applauded by the public. The Coronation Hall was also "Christened," it being used for the first time. Large numibers of those present took advantage of tihe opportunity to dine and partake of afternoon refreshments on the ground. The liberation of the pigeons from the centre of the oval was a pretty sight. Hie result of their race home was eagerly awaited. • Considerable interest was centred in the ambulance competitions, in which four well-trained teams competed. A new departure was welcomed in tihe form of a number of side shows, whidh served as a diversion, and, were well patronised. , ''' ' ■ The results in detail were as follow: CASH EVENTS.
