A Press Association message states •that Mr Walter Atkin, proprietor of t'he Westport News, died at Westport on Thursday evening after an illness extending over six months. The deceased was a native of Cork, Ireland. He came to Melbourne in 1869, and ■subsequently over to New Zealand, working on the West Coast Times at Hokitika. Later, with others, he established thy defunct Grey Valley Times, and subsequently worked in Reefton as manager of the Tnangahua Herald. He afterwards took over thy Lyell Times, which he conducted until 1898. and tihen purchased the Westport Times. He was twice married. His second wife predeceased hiim by five weeks. He leaves by the first mar riage a grown-up family of two sons and three daughters.
