NEW ZEALAND FARMERS' UNION

WHAKATAKI BRANCH.

A meeting of the WhaJkataki 'Jbranch of the Farmers',, Union was ' heiM on the 16th inst.Y at Whakataki. Messrs F. W. Girpves, J. gfoeedy, R-. Holies, C. Hudson, W. .Mason,' W.- Harvey, and R. J. Bar"<W wea-e present. ' •The secretaa-y was instructed to ''ascertain-if the Tumi- branch had •come to any de'cislcui re formation of "the Railway League. The Pure Seeds Bill, sent by the Agricultural Department, was read and discussed. A circular from the Wellington woolbrokers. was also received.— It was resolved that this branch respectfully protests against the • "strike clause" as it now stands, and would suggest that the sale should be effected, in the event of a strike, but that "prompt" date be held over, until the wool cam be for shipment. f One speaker thought that the bro.kers had, in endeavouring to settle their own little "cash on sale" difference with the buyer*, rather jettisoned the interests, of the farmer in favour- of their own. Another thought that the smalll farmer who sells in New Zealand wjflft be the chief sufferer, owing to the reeision. of sale, inasmuch as he cannot always, wait until a later sale for the proceeds of his wool, especially so. on a falling market. A communication from the agents " : of the coasts steaimems. was also brought up. This was a notification, that owing to the late officers' strike and a frtvh agreement with the seamen the whipping owners had reluctantly to *.tor*ase their-freight charges sixpence per bale on wool, sixpence per hundred feet of timber, and hialf-a-crown per ton on ordinary cargo, the latter during the summer' nnonths only. This 1 continual.. "putting it on to "the farmer" did not meet with the approval of the meeting. No doubt, soore, some great strike will be absolutely necessary to (like a thunderstorm) clear the air, and adjust jwioe® and valine® before we oato get ndf industrial peace, and during iftuait ' v Ttf Jwfc> will the farmer suffer a» »i*«k : '•« 4tf 'fiity people? ,'V
