'Sirs Okey, mother of the'member for Taivnaki, died fast, week at the age of eighty-two. - The death is 'announced from Kuaotunu, South Island, of an old settler, in the person of Mr Thomas Kennedy McTavisJi. He fought in the Maori War with the second Waikato militia. His Excellency the Governor on Saturday laid the foundation stone of a. Sailors' Institute at Lyttelton. The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital on Saturday morning last, at the age of twenty-one years, of Miss Doris James, daughter of Mr T. J. James, one time of this town, but later of Pahiatua and Auckland. The deceased underwent an operation for an affection of the throat, and collapsed, soon afterwards, apparently from heart failure. Mr James was present when the one ration was performed. The funeral will leave the residence of Mrs Fred. Fellinghamin Villa Street for the local cemetery "at 2 p.m. to-morrow. Bishop Carroll, ol Lismore, New South Wales, and Monsignor O'Hurau, who" was Secretary to the late Cardinal iMoran, arrived in Masterton on Saturday on a visit to the Very ltev. Dean McKenna. They have come to Now Zealand on a health-re-cruiting trip, and have benefited greatly by their stay at Rotorua. The distinguished visitors leave for Wellington this morning. A Press Association telegram from. Clhristchurch records the death of Mr E. G. H. Mainwaring, eldest son of Admiral Mainwaring, of Whittmore .Hrll,-- Staffordshire, England. He joined the Public Works .Department <under. the late. Mr C. Y. O'Connor, and four or five yen is,a go retired from the Civil Service on a pension, being then land officer in the Railway Department. A Sydney cabin .states that Sir Al-" lon Taylor has been elected Lord Mavor for the sixth time.
