FATAL FIRE
MAN SUFFOCATED AT LOWER HUTT.
A fire which had fatal results occurred at ASicetcwn, Lowe*- Hutt, early on Saturday morning. Shortly after two o'clock the fire brigade were summoned by the bell to a fbur-rccmied ."• cottage In Victoria Street. Ihe men' were promptly on v the scene, but the outbreak waa not suppressed before the structure, wsis' completely gutted. At' the time nobody was. aware of the fact that the cottage was occupied,, but in going over the m/in© aftterwaids the bodyof a man named Thomas Jenkins was found lying face downwards, on tire floor of the back bedroom near iwM&re, it is thought, the fire Jenkins was*in his night attire, and, tjad evidently .been endeavouring to '©scape when Ire was overeomt? by t-hte smoke. He was not buirnt, liiis hair only being singed. ' Jenkins was a single, man about 45 years, of age. Hlo was. employed as ■a wool-paiTer by tlie Geiar Meat 00., and was wiell-known at Petone, •where he residled for Ebmfe time. He .lived, by himself at Alicetown.
