TRAGIC DEATH

OF MR P. F. TANCRED. Mr Prideaux Francis Tancred, who was one of the best kbnwn sporting men in New Zealand in! ibis tame, cam© by his- death in. a fcragfo manner in Masterton yesterday afternoon. For some monthis past hie had been suffering (from tan internal compliainifc, and became very despondent. A few monihc ago, acting upon tine advice of lids friends and medical adrisers, he came to Masterion lanSd took a residence in Cornwall Street, .where Ihe was being attended by a

nurse. Yesterday afternoon his nurse (Mrs Godbehere) went out, and left !iim sitting in the dining-room. Upon Juar return at six o'clock, she found hism sitting upon, .the floor of his bed-i-oom wrth a strap around Ihis neck, apparently dead. She immedife/tely i , informed a neighbour (Mr J. J. Denby), who ran in and cut the strap. The deceased gave a groan om the strap being released, and Mr.Denby tried to restore animation, but faited. Dr Cowie was summoned, but could only pronounco dufe to ibe ex- ' tinot. T3ie deceased (had ttakem a, strap from a portmanteau, tied one end to (tilie top bar of the bedstead, adjusted the other end round his wck,. and sat back, thereby ' strangling foamsel. •Am inquest wrE 'be held to-morrow. The late Mir. Tamxa-ed, who was sixty-one years' tof age, and. single, was a son of the late Sir T. and Lady Tancred.
