WOOL SALES
SHARP ADVANCE IN PRICES,
Messrs Levin and Co. Ltd., Wellington, report:—At t'he second said of t)he current season, held yesterday, 6770 bales were offered by the various brokers, against 8250 bales at the corresponding sale last year. The broken weather is the cause of tQie smaller offering. There was a Large attendance of buyers from the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States, and Dominion factories and fell mongers were wetll represented. Our catalogue contained many nice lines, which attracted considerable attention. The wool generally was bright, and light in condition, and although better than was shown in last November sale, being superior also to last season. November sales hi) London opened on par to a 5 per cent, rise on the low prices ruling in September. This, though satisfactory in itself, did not meet witih the opinion that the market here was going to recover in one Ixviind. Yesterday's sale was a surprise packet, for it showed a marked advance on the* November sale, which was in itself over parity. The cause of the very satisfactory advance was largely due to several American' buyers pushing eagerly for suitable samples. This gave a strong tone, whicth, was felt in all lines, and lifted prices above what are now ruling in London. The quality yesterday being so much better than in tllie November sale makes comparison difficult, but to compare with the corresponding sale of last s°ason the prices were within asd of that sale. Among the clips for America
wore 'Messrs Brady Bros. (Pahautanui) IOJd and 10id; Mr S. H. McLaren, (Martinborough) 10id, and sevoral others at the same figure. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report: —The second wool sale of the season took place to-day, when the Wellington Association of brokers catalogued about 5400 bales, of whioh we offered 1060. The wools submitted generally were in ilight condition, and some showed evidence of a shortness of feed in tilie winter and early spring. There was a large attendance of buyers, representing English, Continental, American, and Colonial houses. Bidding was spirited, and most of our catalogue was sold under the hammer. For finer wool competition on American account was keen. The effects of tflie improved tono of tho London market was reflected in the prices given, which were quite on a parity therewith, if not slightly better for certain lines, notably those suited for the American trade. As compared with the opening salo of the season, .there was a decided advance.
