TARIFF AMENDMENTS.

. MR TUDOR'S SCHEDULE

(MELBOURNE, December 1. Altogether one 'hundred and twentyfour 'amendments to the tariff, are contained in tlie schedule introduced by Hon. F. G. Tudor, Commonwealth Minister for' Trade and Customs. Nearly one half are of a normal character. In order to try and discourage the wearing of natural birds and wings, the duty on these articles has been increased to 30 and 25 per cent, on foreign and British respectively. ■Flannelette regarded as ' highly dangerous and non-inflammable will be admitted at a duty of 5 per cent. on the foiiner and tlie latter will be admitted free.

Owing to the increase in the importation of lamp and gas stoves the duty Bias been increased from 20 per cent to 30 per cent. Gas meters were previously admitted free, but- in the interests of big countries a duty of 20 and 15 per cent will now ibe charged. Mr A. Deafcin declared t ; hat the Plnotectioniistfe were <ssaptM'nitedJ at there being no general revision of the tariff. The schedule appeared to l>e ibased on departmental anomalies. They wanted new methods for the protection of industries. He hoped next session, the .Government would' bring the tariff up-to-date. Mr Jdhnson, an Opposition member, wished to dissociate himself with any declaration of approval of the proposal to re-open the tariff question. The debate has been' adjourned.
