PROSPERITY.
WHAT IT IS DUE TO,
(Received November 30, 9.30 a.m.)
MELBOURNE, November 30
Mr Hunt, the Federal Meteorologist, declares that the widespread be-
lief that the present Australian pr<,6perity is due to the exceptional rainfall and that droughty years ";ill be certain to follow, is not correct. Sinco 1902 the rainfall has been below the average, but farmers benefited by tr.e mistakes of pioneers. The capabilities of the soil were better understood and the adoption of dry-farming and drought resisting wheat had given payable crops in spite of the pool rainfall. The better control of the rab'jit pest, the conservation of water foder, and the tapping of the artesian basin had also helped. The prosperity should be an inoßntive to greater energy.
