THOSE ADVERTISEMENTS.
[To 3Mi Editor. ]
Sir, —I (havenoticed severaladvertisements in the daily .papers of late, exfhorting the peopife to vote conifainiuance, and setting forth- theeevil&v v il& of Kb-license. Op-the otheir 1 liaiid we have that ibody, (kniown as; the VwowBeirs") wiho tell us- to do just the (dpposite. Some of the advertisements are funny enough to ornate an oyster KmSle. For instance, one iadvertise- | tneinft sets forth /the alleged.."fact" ] fcihat if yotu deprive the country of drink there viiif be no means of ' getting revenue from the people. The odd mnifflSbns derived from drink would be a dead loss to ithe country. Briefly, if you don't get' your revenue from a • lbu«g-lholl©, or suck it through' the neck of a bottle, you won't get it at all. If isucih an< unfortunate thing BhbuSd happttn tb&ut we ran out of "drink" thiem the shutters would be up land wie would he bankrupt within twelve .months. "What a blessing is tJhte brewer!' He enables u» to get j revenue. This is probaMy the reason for; .the fafcre of -(those Socialist col l - j onies—tney (bWe mo brewer. The (brewery—ftike Voltaire's God— is a! necessity. If it is&iouM.lhlappeia that \ve (ran out of brewers, it "would become iunimeddately necessary in the interests of isocietjy (and revenue) to create one. Also, an ' articfe- taken from the "Bulletin" (Sydney) whaohl Ib aimed at men' of the cloth is (headed "The, Churches and Prohibition," and) from Ibhe heading, it is miade to apjptear as being aimed ait the prohibition cferic only.' Thlis o& a gross mis* use of -the article. It .was never in•teaided to ibe used iSoM|y in connection with no-license. It was used against the Australian! parson, arid his" figures and statistics generally—especially in (connection! with such case as the "Six HatteriS," and other polfltacaiF matters. Perhaps the NoIfccensei people are not without faults 1 in this respect, also, but, I -ami not dealing'wifclD tliem oni tlhasr occasion. However, if the advertisemei'iit re--1 ferring to revenue ais correct, there I lies the secret of our succes-s- as a [ colony. Let us* export shiploads of I "booze,"' and let 'it be a duty of every Ibyoll citizen: (to drink off our national j deibt. Of couirae I believe that the Ifiquor people are only advertising in ' this strain because thley hia-vc the interests of the. people and the finances of the colony at heart (not like 'he iNb-lioense agitators wbo get five or &ix pounds a week for tliteir efforts).
(They (the Jiquer people-) being thor~ , ough democrats, and advocating that jonly which they feel soire i's for the I good of the country, let, me imak.- :, i suggestion, which, I am sure, has i jer occurred to them., and wlijicL a certain It© receive their support, v;..., that the ballot paper have thie issue added to it: "I vote for State or : Municipal' Control." Such evidence '■as that given by the manager of the ■■GwaSiia State Hotel, Western , Aus- . trall&a, will he- sufficient to induce ithese isocM democrat's to us© ©very ('means in. their power to have the lahove issue l added to the ballot paper. The manager's evidence went to show thai the capital cost of that enterprise was £9446, and the net profits' for eight years £9758.. It paid! the manager £6OO a. year, atod barJmen £4 a week with board and lodging. No charge was made for rent lor interest.— I am, etc.,
