THE ENGLISH TEAM IN AUSTRALIA
MATCH WITH NEW SOUTH WALES.
ENGLISHMEN—FOUR FOE 151
(Received Last Night, 8.0 l o'clock.)
SYDNEY, November 24. The weather was sultry to-day, but the absence of wind prevented the wicket from drying satisfactorily. The start of the matoh was consequently postponed till two o'clock. After several rollings the pitch somewhat improved. The attendance numbered ten thousand. Tiio teams «are: —
England—J. W. H. T. Douglas (cap. tadn), F. R. Foster, G. Gunn, J. B. Hobbs, W. Rhodes, C. P. Mead, J. W. Hitch, S. F. Barnes, F. E. Woolley, H. Strudwick, J. W. Hparne. Twelfth man, J. Iremonger. New South Wales —V. Trumper, (captain), W. Bardsley, C. G. Macartney, A. Cotter, H. Carter, H. V. Hordern, R. B. Minett, E. P. Barbour, E. F. McElhone, B. J. Folkard, S. E. Gregory. Twelfth man, E. L. Waddy.
Trumper won the toss, and sent the Englishmen in. Hobbs alid Rhodes opened to the bowling of Macartney and Folkard. The pitch was bumpy, and a lot of time was spent in patting it down. Hobbs was the more confident of the pair. Rhodes early played a weak one from Folkard through tlhe slips, Trumper being just unable to reach it. When his score had reached 15, Hobbs rashly hit a bumbing ball from Folkard, and Bardsley, at third man, made an easy oatch. Gunn opened his account by brilliantly cuttijig Folkard to the boundary. -
After Macartney had bowled seven overs for six runs, Hordern relieved, Miacartney taking the other end. Four maidens followed the change, Hordern badly beating Gunn. The. latter then mishit a "googlie" through the slips for one. The next ball Rhodes tipped to Cotter at close slip, and the ball was held.
Mead, who followed, was equally uncomfortable with Hordern, whose big off-breaks with leg-break action were completely puzzling. Cotter replaced Macartney, after tlhe latter bowled five more overs without further expense. The. batsmen appreciated tho change. Fifty appeared after seventy-three minutes.
Minnett was. tried next. Gunn gave an easy, chance off him to Hordern in the slips, but Hordern failed to secure it. A few balls later, 9. similar chance was missed.
[ On resuming after the tea adjournment, the play continued slowly, without any startling incident. The century took one hundred ,and forty-five minutes to compile. . Gunn's fifty occupied two hours ,and four minutes. He gave two easy and two difficult chances, all in the I slips. Without adding a run, he was '- run out in trying to score from a I short 'hit to point, Mead refusing to I run. . '■ 1 ' <>•
: -Hearne, following the example of [the more oxporienoedt.. glayers, displayed extreme caution, and epored two in fifteen minutes, when he was caught by Carter behind the wickets off a fast delivery from Cotter. ■ Foster joined Mead, wiho was playing most of the balls back on the pitch, occasionally opening out any thing loose. The fielding was good, without being brilliant.
The light failed at 5.55 o'clock, and play was adjourned. V The scores were aa foilov^— , ENGLAND. —First Innings. J. B. Hobbs, c Bardsley b Folkard 15 W. Rhodes, .c Cotter, b Hordern 15 G. (It will be. noticed" that C. Kelleway, the Australian - is not included in the New South Wales team. This as probably due to the fact that he has not yet recovered sufficiently' from an accident' to his ankle, which also prevented him taking part in the N.S.W.-Queensland match. S. H. Emery, another N.S.W. rep., is also omitted from the team, due no doubt to his being unable to strike form in the inter-State match.)
