The deoe&sed lady was a daughter of Mr A. Schofield, another 1 .respected settler of the-East Coast district, and her brothers are wellknown in athletic circles in Masterton. The funeral takes place on Sunday.

Mr W. Strang, of Gladstone, acted as judge of thoroughbred and light horses at the Taranaki show this week.

The death occurred on Thursday at the residence of his brother-in-law (Mr E. Sullivan), Pahiatua, of Mr M. Rains, at the age of 42 years. The deceased gentleman, who had been ailing for some time, was formerly licensee of the Konini Hotel, and was well and favourably known throughout .the district.. His wife predeceased him some years ago, but he is survived by two children.

The death occurred at Hastings on Thursday night of Mr Thomas Hamlin, 76 years of rage. The deceased was a native of Exeter. He served in the Maori war from 1860 to 1863, and tool: part in the engagements at Matari- JOk korika, Mataliiwa, Makorataki, and ■ others. For Ihis gallant conduct he was presented with an inscribed revolver by the New Zealand Government. 1
