WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE.
The Right Bon. H. H. Asquitb, Prime- Minister of Engllahd, has imtformed a deputation of suffragettes that lite is not favourable to tdie extension of the franchise to Avomieai, because he does not think it would be good for the State. Mir AsquitJh may be quite sincere ikv this opinr ion; but die canndt surely have studied the results which have followed the. extension, of the franchise in the Cblbniieis. The granting of the franchise' to women- has- had a potent influence upon social: legislation., and ha® probably done more than anything else in this Dtomimioai to improve the social, condition, of the people. It- is surprising tluat aPriaive Minister wJio pretends a leaning to democratic sentiment should' be so ultra-conservative ini tlhis particular.
