Mr Harry Mayo, of Nelson, has been engaged as conductor to the Masterton Municipal Brass Band. Mr Mayo is a well-known musician, and has conducted several other bands. Sir Joseph Ward addressed three meetings in his yesterday. He leaves for the north this morning, i and states that he' has great confidence in the result of the elections. His Excellency the "Governor leaves Christohurch to-morrow on an extended tour of the South-Island. The numerous friends of Mr L. X. Prenti.ce, of Masterton, will regret to hear that' lie is in a very critical state of health, and late, last night was reported to bo. sinking fast. His Grace Archbishop Redwood was a visitor to Dajmevirke yesterday. Mr R. J. Dagfe returned to Masterton on Tuesday from a visit to Hamilton, •Rotorua, and Auckland. Mr Dagg acted as a judge of. draught horses at the Hamilton show. Mr J. J. Corry, for ten years Secretary of the Marlborough A. and P. Association, has intimated his inten- | tion of resigning, owing to presure of business. . . , A Dunedin telegram states that "Captain F. P. Evans, of the Aorangf, has been appointed to the command of the Union Company's new steamer Tahiti, which is due at Sydney "next week. •
His Lordship Bishop Sprott is expected to arrive in Masterton to-morrow.
Sergeant Miller, who has been spending a fortnight's holiday in the south, returns to Masterton to-day, and will resume his duties to-morrow.
The engagement is announced cf Miss Lilian Gallagher, youngest daughter of Mrs Gallagher, Marion Street, Wellirgton, to Mr H. F. O'Leary, LLB., Wellington, son of Mr H. J. O'Leary, of Masterton.
Ma jor and Mrs Rowley, of the Salvation Army, will visit Carterton. 011 Tuesday and Masterton 011 Wednesday next.
The remains of the late Mr C. ,'F. Gawith .were interred in the Masterton cemetery yesterday afternoon. The funeral cortege was large, duel representative of the commercial, professional and farming community. The pall-bearers were Messrs W., G. H., V. E-, and J. P. Perry, and Messrs I). K. Logan and T. Jordan. The ceremony at the grave was performed in an impressive manner bv the Rev. IT. Watson.
MissM. K. Wilson, of Newtown, has been appointed assistant in the secondary department of the Carterton District High School.
Mr Marcus, manager for the Harry Rickards Vaudeville Company, was in Masterton yesterday', arranging tor the season of .ono night only, on Wednesday, 29fa1l inst...of the Company at the Town Hall.
Mr and Mrs C. L. N. Petersen, the well-known music teachers, are leaving Carterton shortly, for fresh fields.
It has been announced in the London Gazetto that the King has approved of tlie retention of the title of "honourable" by Air George Fowlds, who .has served for more than three years as a member of the Executive Council of New Zealand.
