PREPARATIONS FOR DEPARTURE. By Telearavh —Press Association. CtHRISTCtHURiOH, Last Night. , The preparations for thle departure -of the Terra Norn for the Antarctic •are being piU'slhed on, and it is anticipated that everything will be in readiness for the departure of ths vessel on' December 15th. The various stores and requisites asked for by Captain Scott are coming to liand, and tfhey wil sihortly be stowed away in the vessel's hold. It is coiniTuon knowledge tlilat the Tferra ' Nova will take down seven Indian transport m/ules and fourteen sledge dogs. Mr J. J. Rinsey, who. lias - been acting for Captaiu Scotit,. stat-j ed that in the event olf the eicpedition not reaching thie Pole this season, the mules and doge woilld be Xivailabfle as a reserve for an attempt next season. Even if the Bole were reiadied this season, a. party would 111 all probability be left in the Antarctic to carry on important scientific 'Work. The animals would be invaluable to the party for transport work. Mir KSnsey is also sending down twelve sledges, whjoh were asked for by the leader of the expedition. Six of these were presenited by an Australian firm, and six were procured from i >orway. Snow slice:, for the muleis land ponies are also being sent down. The mules find dlogs now on Quail Island are doing splendidly, and it is expected that they will l be in fine fettle for their work in the Antarctic.
