AN OFFICIAL EXPLANATION. The following communication, from the Under-Secretary of Public Work-, in irefereoioe to grants (for road works was- read at the meeting of th» Mas-ted-ton County Council yesterday:— "Referring ,to the offers of expenditure of votes for road works, etc., wiMchi wene made ito your Council on October 16th, as there appears to be a slight misapprehension on the paii o!f siomue local bodies in regard tc the items where the amount oiFerted is en account of a latrger sum, I hiave to inform you thjat in, aM! such oases the larger isum mentioned is available for expenditure; thius; where a vote of £250 is provided ow account of, say, £IOOO, the Minister will be prepared to authorise up to= £IOOO so soon as satisfactory proposals are submitted. The reason for allocating the .smaller amount is that, genea'aMy speaking, it is not anticipated that more than that sum will come to charge be'fore Maa-qh 31st" next. If, liowever, local bodies axe in a position' to carry out, and' claim, for, work to the extent of thie larger amount before March 31st next, such claims will be diury met."
