Miss Bright, ,and Messrs Burns Ballachey, Low, and Haslam have been elected to'represent the, Wellington District Institute at the annual council of the New Zealand Educational Institute, to be held at Tlmaru in .January, 1912.
Major T. W. McDonald, . Officer Commanding the Cadet Forces in. ■New Zealand, is leaving Wellington '• on the 19th inst. for England, where he is to undergo a period of one year's! attachment to an • Imperial regiment. Prior to his departure, Major McDonald is to be presented by the officers of the Cadet, Department with, a testimonial and souvenirs.
The death of a native named Hanita Hamuera occurred at Te Whiti, Masterton, early yesterday morning, the cause being pneumonia. The deceased, who was 49 years age, was wellknown in sporting circles. His wife pre-deceased him some time ago, and three children (a son and two daughters) are left to mourn their loss. The funeral will take place at the Uru pa, Te Whiti, at tkjee o'clock to-morrow* {Wednesday).
Bishop Stoue-Wigg, wno is at present in Sydney, and was formerly Bishop of New Guinea, is a brother to Mr A. J. Stone-Wfgg,. of Masterton.
A Press Association telegram from Auckland records the death of Mr senr., father of Mr W. F. Massey, M.P;, Leader of the Opposition.
The death occurred on Sunday off Mr Peter Pender, formerly Inspector of Police in the Wellington district. The deceased, who was eight-four years of age, was well-known and highly respected in Masterton. In his youth ho served in the Irish Mounted Police, and.afterwards went through the Crimea. He came to New Zealand in 1862.
Mr J. A. Kinsella, ex-Dairy Commissioner for New Zealand, is living at Rookwood, near Sydney. He is in, very bad health.
Professor Black, of the Otago University, is retiring, after 40 years' service. Steps have been taken to commemorate his long and faithful service rendered to theuniversity.
. Mr E. W. Christmas, the well-known New Zealand artist, ig now out in Buenos Ayres on a painting ' n expedition; and does not expect to return to> this country till next June. He exihibited some eighty pictures in - Buenos Ayres, and was very pleased with the results.
Lord Islington has taken up his residence in Chri&tchurch, and will remain there for.two months. He has taken the residence of jMr A. E. G. Rhodes for that period.
Captain C. H. Moss, formerly of Masterton, is at present in Gisborne supervising the installation of machinery at the mechanical wool-treat-ing works in that township. \
Mr W. F. Massey; Leader of the will speak at Eketahuna. on Tuesday, the 14th' inst.
Mr G. A. Clark, who has been manager of the Martinbarough branch. ofL the Bank of New Zealand, has beeif appointed to take charge of the -Bank's branch at Levuka, in the-Fiji Islands* and will leave Martinbarough about the 20th of this month. Mr Bailie will replace Mr Clark at the local bank. Miss Rubi Seddon, daughter of the ,late Right Hon. R. J. Seddon, was married to Staff-Surgeon Woods at Mai-ylebone Church. .»Many New Zea~ landers were present at the ceremony'.
