Mr William Gillespie, Returning Officer for the- Masterton electorate, has returned from a visit to the outlying parts of the electorate, where lie has made arrangements for polling places and deputy returning officers for the coming election. The friends of .Mr M. Dempsey, will regret to hear of the death of his headmaster of the Eketahuna school, father, which occurred in Wellington last week. '
Sir John Logan Campbell, the "Father of Auckland," celebrated bis ninety-fifth birthday on Friday last. In .spite of his great age he still attends daily at his office. Mr M. Miriogue, of tho Masterton telephone exchange, has been transferred to Wellington. He leaves for tho Empire City by this morning's train.
The death is announced of the relict of the late Mr Walter Rutherford, formerly of Sherwood Downs, Amuri, Carterbury.- The deceased, who was sixty-nine years of age, came to New Zealand in 1869.
Mr T. Anderson, of the Pahiatna post and telegraph staff, lias heen transferred to Napier. The Rev. A. T. Thompson and Messrs E. Feist and W. Wingate leave Masterton by this morning's train en route for Dunedin, where they will represent Knox Church at the Presbyterian Assembly.
