The weather for the "People's Day" of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society's annual show was diull and threatening in the morning, and a light shower of rain fell. Towards noon, however, the sky became clearer, and the remainder of the day .was all tliat could be desired. The attendance, as is usual on "People's Day," was very large, settlers and their families arriving by train, and buggy and motor car | from all parts of the district. It is j estimated that between 5000 and 6000 personsi were present, including , many viMtors ; the •. Mile Bush, Manawatu, and, other, parte,,:,- Laidy and a parity.' from"' Governments House arrived, on thegrounds, early "in tho afternoon, and were welcomed; by the Booth). The ■ frranaßtnnds weire-'-' crowded with ladies and their escorts, and the scene in the afternoon was one of animation. The Carter-; ton Brass Band rendered a choicer programme of music in the neighbourhood of the lawn, arid the num-j eVous side-show,s kept up a constant rattle of drums* and other instruments, which had a diversifying, if not exhilarating effect. The .parade of stock at 2 o'clock was a feature of the show, and was marshalled in an admirable manner by the President. The .jumping events were a source of great attraction, the capacious ring being lined with people several deep. The jumping was well up to the standard, and there were no serious mishaps. The' Hunters' jumping competition. was won by Mr B. E. Westmoreland's- "Minota," froan thirteen other competitors. The, champion jump fell to Mr W. D. i Watson's "Yeast," who negotia, ted the obstacles in a faultless manner. "Minota" was second in this event. A good deal of interest was taken in tho weight-guessing competitions, for which substantial prizes were offered. By tho way, it iseems somewhat remarkable that what should be regarded as a test of skill in judging should continue to be described as "guessing." The whole of the Arrangements for the show, as on the opening day, were in perfect order, and the Piress is indebted to the officials for the uniform courtesy displayed. The display of produce, etc., in the agricultural hall', attracted large crowds throughout the day, and the awards lin the cheese and! butter classes-were closely scrutinised/
CATTLE,
The judging of fat cattle took place yesterday. Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.P., almost "scooped the pool" in this class. Some % of the beasts shown were of very fine quality, and a credit ,to the district. The class for milkers was very strong, and the competition was keen. Mr W. Saywell and Mr O. Morgan were very sniccessful, and the judg£ remarked that it be difficult to find a Fetter all-round lot of milking stock than that exhibited at Carterton.
HORSES
The championship in thoroughbred stallions was awarded to Mr O. McOullough's ; 'Conqueror," who has already proved himself by the successes of his progeny upon, the turf. Mr W. Hercock's "Waihakeke" was awarded first honours for stallions best calculated to improve the breed of carriage and trap horses; Mr H. JJ. Bunny's "Chicane" and ."Little Slam," were awarded hxsi place in Jraggy ponies (paia-), while Mi- W., I>« Watson scored with/ "Ngaiomri" in 1 the dog
cart horse class. Mr Rupert Mor-
rison's ' 'Gentleman Bill" was adjudged the "best buggy horse in the ring. The weight-carrying, hacks were a good all-round lot. Mr Donald McKenzie was again successful in ladies' hacks with "Lady Lock." The challenge cup for the best hack in the show was won by Mr John Cooper. In the draught' section, Mr R. Falloon's "Brilliant Boy" was awarded first for aged stallion. Mr A. Tocker was the most successful exhibitor in the remaining draught classes.
POULTRY
j The exhibition of poultry was not numerically strong, although some excellent birds were shown. Mr T. W., Barnes, of Masterton, took two firsts in Leghorns. Mr R. J. Chapman, of Carterton, was also successful in this section. Mi* C. R. P. j Armstrong, of Carterton, swept the boards in Buff. Orpingtons, whilst Mr T. W. Hicks and Mr W. Tucker divided honours in Black Orpingtons. Mr P. C. Anderson, the well-known ' ParkraJe /-breeder, toak-allthe priSfes in the- Spanish:' setrtSo'n, .whilst' Messrsß. & man and Jv, Billiiigton, of 'M^ter-, ion, .divided'in Silver Wyandottes. Mrf>T." B. Holdaway, of Tu\alnha. soared' with.,, Whitft.-Wyandottefc, and 'Mr R. J. Chapman with Partridge. ( The duck class was not particularly strong. In pigeons, Messrs J. Bil- ' lington (Masterton), J. M. Nicholls j (Carterton), W. Rathbone (Carter- 1 ton), and C. Valler (Masterton) took j most of the prizes. j
DOGS. The exhibition in' the dog class was a really creditable one, some splendid collie arid sheep dogs being shown, though some of. the \ best were, unfortunately, entered in the wrong sections. Mr G. W. Schroder, of Masterton, again scored in the pointer- section with his fine bitch "Bella." Mr Gillies was successful in the fox teirier dog class, and Mr H. Madeley in the section for fox terrier bitches. The spaniels were well represented. Mr E. H. Sharp, of Masterton, was awarded first for bull dog and bull bitch. ; JPRIZE LIST. * ' , HORSES.
