THE SYDNEY STRIKE POSSIBLE SPLIT AMONG THE MEN. '

The strikers are TWi+'oss, owing to the deep sea men working while they are idle. They state that the deep sea men were with them in voting for a cease m work, but were not giving their practical support. . This will probably lead to a split in the ranks and the formation of separate union for deep sea workers. The companies would welcome such arrangements. • A compulsory conference met and discussed the men's refusal to accept the executive's advice.

It dissolved, neither side having a proposal to overcome the difficulty. In order to oorifoie the area of the dispute a.s much as possible, another conference will be summoned between the representatives of the Waterside Workers' Federation and the Steamship Owners' Federation in other parts.

SYDNEY, October 26. A deputation of merchants waited npon the Hon. Mr Carmichael and suggested prosecuting the strikers. Mr Carmichael replied that the men men were working under Federal agreement, and it was therefore largely a Federal matter. Nevertheless, the Government was doing its utmost, and he hoped that soon there would be something favourable to report.
