TENNIS NOTES.

(By "Wallflower.")

The annual meeting of the New Zealand Tennis Association is set down for Tuesday, October 31st.

The local courts are in exceptionally good condition this season', and compare favourably with any in New Zealand. Play is expected" to be commenced very shortly.

In view of the New Zealand Championship meeting which is to be held in Christchurch prior to the Davis Cup contest On December 26, 27, and 28, on the courts adjourning the Davis Cup courts players are already taking advantage of the favourable weather and obtain much useful practice. The tenni.3 carnival at Christchurch on the dates mentioned above and the Davis | Cup contest on the three following days, viz., December 29 and 30, and January 1, should prove an attraction which fcrt' followers of the pastime will be prepared to resist, more especially if, the mighty champions, Brookes and Larned were to meet. Unfortunately, however, it has transpired that owing to private business ; in connection with his late father's estate Larned cannot come after all, so the Brookes versus Larned contest appears to be a vain hope. Australian players can now be expected to visit these shores in vast numbers in and no doubt t many of the visitors will take part in the New Zealand championship meeting. In .fact, the New Zealand meeting should be the most brilliant on record, and the championships should be contested for by a recoi-d number of champions. At any rftte, tUio acceptance of the dates must have lifted a weight from the minds of the management, as it simply now means success, whereas, had the contest been set down for the second week in December, a loss was sure. All that is now required is fine weather for the gathering, and uppermost questions at present are: Where to secure 'accommodation, and when will the plan of tihe grandstand seats be made public?
