Members of the Legislative Council on Monday presented Sir John Find- ; lay with an illuminated address 1 on the i occasion of his retirement from the ' Legislative Council. The death is announced by cable of the Earl of Onslow, a former Governor jof New Zealand. The deceased, who. j was fifty-eight years of age, was Go- : vernor of this Dominion from 1888 to 1892. He leaves a,widow and family |of four. The Hon. I At the age of 82 years, another old j veteran passed away at Lyttelton on j Saturday in the person of Mr Alfred Button, Deceased, who was born at Maidstone, in Kent, joined the Navy and served through the Crimean war. lie gained the Baltic, Crimean, and Turkish medals, and was also the holder of the Sebastopol clasp, he having taken 'part in the siege of that place. > ( Mr H. F. Green, accountant for the Masterton Borough Council, has been granted leave of absence to attend competitions in Wellington. ™ Mr J. Sharkey, lately relieving stationmaster at Pahiatua, has been appointed stationmaster at Kaitoke. Mr J. W. C. Backhouse, of Weber, has been transferred to the vacancy in the Featherston post office staff, caused by the transfer of Mr Stephens to Christchurch. Mr A. H. .Herbert, of. Eketahuna, has left on a tour to the Pongaroa district. The death is announced of Mr H. Wagstaff, which occurred at Pahiatua on Friday last. The deceased owned' and worked the brewery at Mangatainoka for a number of years, and before that managed the first checsofaetorv in Woodville.
