DISTRICT NEWS
[From Our Own Correspondent.]
KAIPAROiRiO.
"•It never rains hut it pours." Farmers, Who a fortnight ago were wishing for rain, are now just as anxious to see line weather. The rainfall ifor the week ending on Oct. 20th «was 8.12 inches. The weather is now very much milder, but there is no sign of its becoming any drier. The local sawmill has been idle for the greater part of the week, owing to the inclement weather. Fortunately most of the farmers finished docking operations a fortnight ago. Jn the imiajority of cases satisfactory percentages ihave !been obtained. Mr T. Sunnex, who had the misfor- : tune to receive a nasty cut on the ; log .whilst working in. the ibush, is . ■progressing well, and expects to be : I able to resume work shortly. I The Makakahi River has been in : high flood during the greater part ■■ ■of the week, and? in consequence, { settlers have had. considerable diffi- ! culty in getting their milk to the fac- ; •tory. The ford is not a safe one;' when the river is at all flooded, and ! those who are obliged to cross have' frequently to incur great risk in doing so. There will ibe very great disappointment throughout the district if the (present session of Parlia.ment is (brought to a close, and no grant has ibeen made for a bridge. Owing to the severe storm which took place last Tuesday night, the No-license lecture which had heen arranged, did not take place.
