HOW IT IS DONE.

Amongst the railway authorisations this year is a vote of £15,000 for the Raetihi connection. The local paper .cannot see that the undertaking is a national one, and that the Government has merely done its duty by making the authorisation. It says that the vote will "strengthen the Government in this district, and enhance the prospects of the sitting member." Presumably, had the vote not been made, the Government and the sitting member would, metaphorcally speakng, be "up the spout." But Raetihi has its price, and the Government the money. Thus are instory and railways made, and elections won!
