A PUNITIVE EXPEDITION.

The caible tells' us that an expedition ha»; 'been despatched to punish the savages of Abor, in India, for the murder of .the political officer, Mr Noel Williamson. English files to hand show that the force -consists of the Ist Battalion of the Bth Ghurkas, the 32nd Pioneers, and a company of Sappers, with the Ist Battalion of the 2nd Ghurkas a® reserve, while, military police with seven-pounder will accompany the force. Maj-or-General Bower, C.8., commanding the Assaim Brigade, will be in command of the expedition. Mr Williamson, assistant political officer to the Government of Eastern Bengal and Assam, was on a peaceful mission when he was attacked by the Abors. The operations will 'be difficult on account of the jungle and of the characte of the enemy. The Aoors belong to the Mongoloid race, and are untutored savages. Though unaccustomed to the use of firearms and to concerted action,, they are not without skill in raiding, and know how to make use of the dense jungle through which tlie column; under Major-Gen-eral Bower must advance. The Abors are aware of the preparations, and mean to fight.
