A very old and respected resident of Hastings in the person of Mr William Clark, well-sinker;" passed aiyay at his residence in Willow Park Road on Saturday last.
Mr William McKenzie, of Mastertony will act as judge of Hereford cattle at the Manawatu show.
It is with deep regret that we have to record the death of Miss Malcolm, of thio town, , which occurred at the Mastcrton Hospital yesterday. The deceased lady was well-known; in Masterton, and prior to her residence here had conducted ladies scholastic institutions in different parts of the Doro- , inion. The late Miss Malcolm, by her V kindly disposition, endeared herself to all who knew her and her death will be' keenly felt by a' wide circle of friends in all parts of the district. She'leaves one sister (Mrs. J. D. Cruickshank) of Wellington, and a brother in Canada, to mourn their loss. The funeral will leave the residence of Mrs. Oliver Smith, Lansdowne, at one o'clock this afternoon for the Ma stertpn cemetery.
The members of thewMasterton Baptist Church and their friends gave Pastor Swinerd, on his return, from Conferencej a welcome-home surprise party, at his residence, on Monday evening. Mr A. Anstioe, on behalf of the members and friends, made a presentation to Mr and Mrs Swinherd in token of the esteem in which they are held. A most enjoyable evening was spent in parlour games and musical items
Prior to the commencement of his address at Miki Miki on Monday evening, Mr G. R. Sykes was presented by the settlers of the district, in which he resided for a number .of years, with a handsome writing-desk. The presentation was made by Mr E. The death is announced in the Hawke's Bay Herald of Mr Samuel Breachen, of Elsthorpe, aged 72, who arrived in the Dominion (a child in arms) in 1840. His parents settled at the Lower Hittt. The deceased, who was a widower, has left a large family of sons and daughters. Bishop and Mrs Mules, of Nelson; sustained a painful accident while driving in the city on Monday evening. When turning a steep corner their horse slipped on the pavement and fell, capsizing the gig. The occupants were thrown out. Mrs Mules escaped with a slight, shaking, but Bishop Mules sustained several cuts about his head.
Mr T. R. Fleming, Chief Inspector of Schools, is at present engaged in theexamination of schools in the Wairarapa, - \ ■.
