Bates, of the Meteorological Office this evening issued the following summary and forecast:— A westerly ikxw pressure area of unusual intensity has enveloped the country, the barometer recording 28.98 inches at the Banff at 3 p.m. to-day. High northerly and westerly wind® have prevailed, and rain fows (fallen in most pants of the tryPresent indications are for westerly wind®, strong .to heavy gale, and veering to southerly shortly. Colder, cloudy and unsettled weather, with' heavy rain, is probable generally. (Snow on the higher levels, arid hail in- parts of the South Island, with riveriSi flooded on the West Coast.
