WELLINGTON FIRE BRIGADE
an agreement come to
By Telegraph—Press Association
WELLINGTON, Last Night. Rumours were current to-day that the Fire Brigade intended to strike if their demands were not agreed to; but this possibility was averted by a conference with the Committee, who made an offer which the men accepted. The Council met in the afternoon and ratified the terms agreed on. The wages are raised to £2 for probationers, and £2 3s to £2 10s for firemen. Senior hands also get advances, and their wages range from £2 12s 6d to £3 2s 6d. Councillors complimented the Mayor (Mr T. M. Wilford, M.P.) upon tihe tact with which he had handled the situation. Arrangements had been made to utilise a volunteer brigade and fir© police if the men refused to come to terms.
