The Horiiowood to Kaiwihata road has been opened for wheel traffic. Mr 6. R. Sykes addresses the electors at Rangitumau to-night, and Mr A. H. Herbert at Wangaehu. The barquentine Carla, which went ashore at Wangamii some weeks ago, was re-floated yesterday. The Masterton County Council decided yesterday to advertise for the services of a ranger for the Alfredton Riding.
The Treasury has forwarded a sum of £52 to the Masterton County Council for expenditure in metalling on the Miki Miki road. The contractors for the road formation between the two bridges intend proceeding with the filling in of the approaches to the structures.
At the suggestion of Cr. Temple the Masterton Borougjh Council (has decided to secure an extra supply of coal for. the gasworks in anticipation l( pf a I strike of the officers of coastal vessels.
The Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine) and C?r. Ewington have been appointed to representee Masterton Borough Council at the conference to be held in connection with the proposed Agricultural for the IVairarapa.

The club was aliso granted permission to use one of the rooms in the old tea kiosk, subject to satisfactory arrangements being made with the caretaker. Mr J. W. Blackman (manager of the Borough gasiworks) stated at last night's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council that, judging fromthe returns for the half year ending September 30th, he anticipated that the working for the first whole year at the new works would be very satisfactory.
The scheme for educating Judges as considered by the Wairarapa P. and A. Society is to 1 be inaugurated at the Society's show at Carterton on 25th and 26th insts. All desiring the expert advice and assistance of those engaged to judge should communicate with tlhe Secretary at Carterton, and obtain a copy of the rules regulating the education. The fee for entrance is fixed for this show at 2a 6d.
Little progress has been made with the construction of the two bridges at tihe northern approach to Masterton during the past montJh, the contractor Slaving been delayed for the want of timber. He will, however, with the timber in hand,, be able to complete ono>- ha If' the mit of traffic passing over, and he ufill then proceed with the dismantling of the old truss bridge.
A letter was read at the meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday from the Secretary of the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, stating that the.Council would be called upon, in conjunction with tihe County, lo <eiect -four • re-. nresentativies; -of the Hospital aiid, Charitable; Aid Boarcl at the ; County elections, which' take place in November next.

GoUhc}| yesterday; pointed but that the resolution passed at a special meeting of the Council in reference to the Waipoua bridges was a direct negative to a resolution passed,at the ordinary meeting. He wished to know if it was not necessary to rescind the former motion. : The clerk stated that Councillors had apparently changed their minds on the subject. The Chairman ruled that the resoiutions did not conflict.
Information was received from the steamer Tofua, which arrived at Auckland from the Islands on Thursday, that there was a great scarcity of shipping labour in Samoa. It was difficult to get sufficient men to work cargo, and traders were contemplating the advisability of importing labour. Already one trader has experimented with 19 Punjabis. ! It is stated that bricklayers leaving Auckland at the rate of six or seven each week. On - enquiry an .Auckland reporter wa» informed that* bricklayers are being induced to go to" Sydney by offers of hour more titan the prevailing .rate of pay in, Auckland, . and were being refunded theif passage -money on arrival. In Brisbane it is said as much as Is lid hour ,is being paid, with an 4td- r ditional bonus if the men stay six months.
At the meeting of the Council of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, distribution of trout fry from the Masterton fishponds was agreed upon as follows:—Rainbow trout fry: 10,000 each to Palmerston Nortih, Marton, Mangaweka, and Taihape. Brown trout fry: 20,000 each to Palmerston North, Eketahuna, Pahiatua, Marton, Mangaweka, Hunterville, Tai'liape, Wairarapa, Masterton Ponds,, Akatarawa; 30,000 to Levin, and 60,000 to the streams around Wellington.
Or. Temple asked at last night's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council if the Wairarapa.Cricket Association had paid for the use of the Park Oval for last season. On being answered in the negative, Cr. Temple added that an arrangement 'had 'been made whereby the Cricket • Association had agreed to pay the first instalment on December'lst, and the balance on April Ist. Cr. Temple stated that; lie considered that the Association should not be allowed 1 the use of the Oval until they had paid for it. The extension of the gas main in Kuripuni street has been oompleted by the manager of the Masterton gasworks.
The cash revenue of the Masterton gasworks for the six months ended on September 30th, totalled £5,756 15s 4d, as against £5,165 2a for the same period of last year.
Entries for the Wairarapa P. and A. Society's show on the 25th and 26th insts., are closing shortly, and intending exhibitors are requested to send in their entries at an early date .
The Rev. A. Hodge, of Masterton, addressed a No-Lioense meeting at Wiangaehu last night. Mr C. Ibbetson presided, and there was a good attendance. The speaker was ed a hearty vote of tihanks.

The Masterton County Council, as at present constituted, held its last j meeting yesterday. At tihe conclusion of the business, the Chairman (Or. W. J. Welch) thanked members for the kindness and courtesy extended him during the period of his Chairmanship. It had, he said, been a pleasure to preside over the meetings. Members had.' together to work and not ; to He acknowledged he. had shortcomings. (Members: No I) 'He paid a warm tribute to the staff, and particularly to the Clerk (Mr F. G. Moore), who had made, the work of the Council comparatively easy. He also acknowledged the services rendered by the Press.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Independent Order of Rechabitest was hpld in the Dominion Hall last evening, Bro. W. Andrews, D.R.-, in the dhair. Routine business was transacted, after which the meeting adjourned to Murray's Hall, where an enjoyable social was ilield. The chairman was Mr,.C. E. Brick, Tile, and Drainage Co., Ltd., • will present the following report at the annual meeting to be held in Carterton on the 17th inst: —W<e have pleasure in. presenting to you our twelfth annual report and balancesheet. Our volume of business has increased by £556 during the year. Our stock has also increased 'by £495. We are pleased to show a net profit of £345 10s 6d, and after writing off 5 per cent for "depreciation, of plant and buildings, £167 9s 8d; payment of Directors' fees, £35 10s; we recommend paying a dividend of 6 per cent., amounting to £lB9 14s on paidup capital, and ask the authority of the shareholders to carry the balance to reserve account. Six gas cookers were soJd by th» Masterton Borough gas department during tihe month of September, making a total of 24 since the 'beginning of the financial year. The value of fittings sold for the same period was £371 lis 7d.
