By Teleoravh —Prca* Association.

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night

The Terra Nova, the British Antarctic expedition. 6hip, which has been engaged on a coastal survey, arrived at Lyttelton at noon yesterday. The object of the cruise was the defining of a one hundred fathom line in the vicinity of North. Cape and Three Kings-, and this was duly attained, 535 absolutely fixed soundings having been taken. These have yet to be worked out, but roughly they demonstrate that the 100 fathoms line, instead of continuing unbroken from off the mainland round tbe outermost island, is divided by a narrow deep channel between the most southerly points of the group and the mainland. It was also ■ascertained that the configuration of the islands, as- shpwji,.p.n.the chart, is, incbrrectji ahSv*h<? configuration ;4lid' be definitely fixed, 'at onceV Dredging was doneV-and, Captaia Lillie got a good collection of glanton organisms that float oh the; surface of the water. On tlie passage southward one or two deep sea soundings were taken. Kaikoura was reached at 3.30 a.m. on Thursday last, and the work of divining the hundred fr.Hiom from the- point, some dhtiuice south of Kaikoura where the admiralty sounding was ended, was begun. Three miles south of Kaikoura a depth of 500 fathoms was recorded, and about a mile from that the sounding was only 50 fathoms. The ship's sounding; extended for thirty miles along the coast northwards, fortysix soundings being taken. The hands will be given leave on Tuesday for a fortnight. After that there will be refilling to be done, and stores will be shipped when they arrive from EngV land. A hut for the .Antarctic will be taken on board. The Terra Nova will leave Lyttelton for the expedition's base afMoMurdoch Sound on December 15th.

WELLINGTON. FIRE-BRIGADE. DISSATISFIED WITH PAY. Bii THlenraph—Tress Afiviatiu... WELLINGTON, Last Night. Rumours of a trouble between the Fire Brigade staff and the City Council were about yesterday. It was even said that the firemen threatened to strike. The men are not satisfied with the reply of the Council to a petition for better pay. The men claim that the present rate is not a fair living wage for the work engaged in,', and does not compare favourably 'with* that of other centres. Increases amounting to £9l were granted at the last meeting of. the Council, but the men are far from satisfied ;with them, and to-day asked for a more favourable settlement. As the demands «ere urgent, the Mayor summoned \the Council together and heard the 1 men. A committee was appointed to meet the men again on Wednesday. In the meantime, neither the Council nor the men are prepared to make any statement.
