LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP.
WON BY MISS BRANDON AN JUiiERESTING GAME.

WELLINGTON, Last Night. The; I\ew Zealand Ladies' Golf Championship Meeting was brought to a close yesterday, on the Hereto unga links, which were in perfect order. A very large number of spectators made the journey from town, the special train being crowdI ed. The weather wills again beautiI fully fine, everything being in favour of good golf. The great event was in the final of the championship between Miss Gould (Otago) and Miss L. Brandon (Wellington). Quite an army of spectators followed the game, among those who- tramped round the links being Lord Islington ■ and General Godley. The match gave ,rise to. a .very keen-battle,..:- which went to .the 'lastN hole.' The visitihg' player was quite:;at; 3ier ibest," rievettheless'very fejw ; iriiistakes' were'made. The first hole was halved inSyjMiss Brandon taking the next, in 5 to 7. 1 - Brandon taking the' next'lby 4 to 5, and the fifth, in a perfect 3 to 2, this ! making her three up. The Otago lady nowi showed improved form, taxing the sixth in 6to 7, the 7th , in a like, score, and the Bth, the longest hole on the links, also in 6 to 7. This made them all square. While Miss Gould was showing pretty play at tlie ninth, she holed in 4 to 5, j and was now one up. By a great recovery the local player, thanks to a good putt, holed the, 10th in s—all square. Miss Brandon won the. 11th in 6 to 7, the next being halved in 5. The 13th fell to Miss Gould, thus again making it all square, the interest being now very keen. The player won the next in a per,fect 3 to 4 'by the aid of a threeyards putt, but at the 15th Miss Brandon, failing to carry the high bank with her shotj lost in 4 to i s—all square, At the 16th, thanks' t:> lying herself in a dead stymie, Miss Gould failed, while the 17th wo*, halved in an excellent 5, Miss Brandon being dormy 1 at< the 18th. Tin- Otago lady extinguished her chance, by badly topping her drive, and second, she made a great effort to recover with a magnificent drive tc the green, Miss Brandon, however, playing in very correct style, holed in's to 6, winning by 2 up, »tm,idst enthusiastic cheers for both;) players. Subsequently the prizes, were presented by Lord Islington, who congratulated Miss Brandon on winning the coveted honour, and condoled with the losers. The links, lio said, were in fine order. The management had been admirable, while a fine sporting spirit had been shown ,hy all the competitors, who, lh was sure, would remember the 17th annual tournament with very great pleasure. Afterwards the Wellington "Ladies' Golf Club entertained the visitors to a big.afternoon tea. During the morning a Consolation Handicap was played, Miss Brewster winning in the under 16 handicap class, whiles Mrs O'Meara and Mrs Burnett Stuart tied the oVer 16 handicap division.
