THE MASTERTON SEAT
MR HERBERT AT KOPUARANGA
Mr A. H. Herbert addressed a good attendance of electors at Kopuaranga last evening. -Mr Blade occupied the chair. The candidate, after explaining his reasons for standing, made a very vigorous attack on what he termed the "so-called Liberal party." Mr Herbert dealt very fully with the waste and extravagance, particular reference being made to the -Hutt Road, the method of-.sending £IOOO to Canada at a cost of ' £6OO, Givil Service cost of Administration, and taxation, etc. Dealing with thje recent loan raised by the Government of 6J millions, Mr Herbert stated, that the Government had refused to give any information on the question of ! cost of raising the loan. This, 'he contended, was altogether wrong; "No. Prime Minister had a right to refuse, the people this information. In connection with this he (Mr Heriiert) had worked out the cost from English' financial papers, and he .found,it .to-be. 6 per cent., or £390,000, i and this was for four years only. The candidate also dealt fully with the Budget, the land policy, the Agricultural Depart-. ment, Mokau land transaction, etc. In reply to questions, Mr Herbert stated that while borrowing continued l , .funds were' absurd. The. statement by Mr Millar that the Wairarapa line did not pay axle grease J was not true. The figures he quoted on railways were from Hansard. A ' hearty vote of thanks was accorded tihe candidate oh the motion of Mr J. G. Cottle, seconded by Mr Donovan.'
