AT GERMAN NEW GUINEA
HIS COMPANION ESCAPES. (Received Last Night, 9.5 o'clock.) SYDNEY, October 4. A German mail steamer brings news of the murder of Captain Broetter, at German New Guinea. Captain Broetter's schooner, carry-
ing a crew of four Europeans and twenty natives, was exploring the north-west of Friedrich Wilhelmshav-
Broebter and another European were examining a river, when they were surrounded by natives, and the captain was fatally speared. His companion escaped by floating down the river on a log. He found that the schooner had disappeared, and it is feared that she foundered in a storm with all hands. The German authorities have despatched a punitive expedition to the scene of the murder.
