AWFUL CALAMITY
TOWNSHIPS SWEPT AWAY.
HUNDREDS OF LIVES LOST, Received This Morning, 12.15 o'clock. NEW YORK, October 1. The town of Austin, in Pennsylvania, with a population of 3200, has been almost obliterated through the bursting of a dam of the Bayliss Pulp Paper Company. Six hundred are known to be dead. The debris caught fire, and the town of Cbstello, below Austin, with a population of five hundred, was annihilated. The survivors are of opinion that two thirds of the population are dead. A twenty-feet dam gave way, letting free five hundred million gallons of water. The roar was heard miles away. The town of Wharton also suffered. Practically every building in Cbstello was levelled by the torrent.
Every member of Senator Baldwin's family, excepting himself, perished. The loss of property amounts to millions.
