LONDON, September- 28
The Times publishes .statistics showing that, in the .event of war, there axe no present indications that any large Italian, and Turkish armies .would collide. Itaily's manifest naval superiority would place Tripoli at her mercy. Tiro Sultan's armies would ibe unable to proceed to an attack so long as. Turkey was without the help of- a naval power capable of clearing the (Mediterranean, of the Italian warships. Otherwise the two Powers were mot unevenly matched. Each had approximately a million, and a quarter of trained men ready. ■ A Times correspondent, who was lately in Nigeria, in <an article, remarks, that events are apparently shaping in a fashion calculated to stir (the Islam, depths throughout Africa.. The consequences would possibly Ibe momentous for the interests of African Powers. • A few. years ago the Italian. , ambitions in Tripoli might, perhaps, have been achieved witliout much difficulty, whether mioiiallly .justifiable or not; but their active, expression mow occurs when, two' ch*cumstances. have entirely altered the (situation.. Firstly, the recrudescence of Turkey's political activity in Tripoli, and the vast-hinter-land; secondly, the Senussis' recognition of the Sultan's spiritual authority:

BY SOCIALISTS AND ANARCHISTS. i ' HFABITY RESPONSE OF RESERVISTS. Received This morning, 12.30 o'clock. ROME, September 28. Socialists, Republicans and Anar- „ dusts, in Rome, Florence and other cities. are attempting to provoke ] a,nti-milita.ry outbreaks. The Government has been compell-' ed to station troops to repress the rising. Many ira.ilway stations are occupied by the military. Some stone-throwing has occurred, and numerous arrests have been made. The projected general strike proved a complete fiasco. Extremists, unable to meet publicity, harangued private [assemblages even to the extent of glorifying the regicide.
Tlie bulk of the population tliroughout Italy, especially in the South, also in Sicily, is enthusiastically in favour of the expedition. The Reservists have responded with great alacrity to the summons.
