CUSTOMS DUTIES.

We hla.ve to thank the Bangitikei Advocate for pointing out that we were an error in saying that a plank in the Farmers' Political Federation asked for a pledge from candidates that there should he no further increase id "Customs," taxation. The Federation asks that no increase in ''protective'duty" (be imposed. At first sight this would appear to be a, distinction without a difference. On! closely analysing it, however, it will toe found that Customis, duties . are not necessarily "protective" du-/ ties, ithoughi in many oases they undoubtedly are. What the Federation desires is that there shall be no further bolstering up of local industries —which should ;be vigorous enough to support themiselves'- i -at the expense ■©£ the general itaxrpayer. This is a very- proper demand to make.
