The death.'is announced by cable from London of the Rev. Robinson Duckworth, Canon of Westminster.
The Rev. J. T. Phillips preached his farewell sermon at Tinui on Sunday last to a, large congregation. Sir Joshua Williams, who is at present indisposed, celebrated his 74th birthday on Tuesday. \ The Clutha Presbytery have sustained a unanimous call from Lovell's Flat congregation to the Rev. A. Morton, of Wanganui. The death is announced from Dunedin of Mrs R. Bauchop, Port Chalmers, mother of Colonel Bauchop, D.S.O.j now in London. The death occurred in a private hospital at Wanganui on Tuesday of Mrs Tilley, wife of Mr Fred Tilley, the well-known Fordell horse-breaker.
Mr J. Milne, Secretary of the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company, leaves Masterton to-day on a trip to Sydney. The health of Mr A. W. Hogg, M.P., is still very indifferent. The member for Masterton has been granted another week's leave of absence from his Parliamentary duties.
A London cable, received last night, announced the death of Sir Robert Hart, K.O.M.G. The deceased, who was born in 1835, had held a number of important posts in the China service.
The Hokitika iSchool Committee has appointed Mr L. Deßerry to the position! of headmaster of the Hokitika High School. MrDeberry, who is to take up his duties in the early part of next month, is at present headmaster of the Cbbderi School, Grey district.
Miss A'nderson Hughes* of Eden, Auckland, who is lecturing in the interests of No-License and Dominion Prohibition movement, is a visitor to Masterton, • ajid is the guest of Mrs Marley, Chapel Street. Mr J. Ball, of Messrs Dalgety and 'Co.'s Eketahuna branch, has been transferred to Pahiatua, and Mr Cyril Fairbrother, of the Pahiatua branch, has been transferred to Martinborough. v
Mr P. R. Flatman, ex-M.P. for Geraldine, died yesterday morning at his farm at Woodbury. He had been seriously ill for the past few days. The deceased gentleman, who was born, in Suffolk in 1843, arrived at Lyttelton in 1862. He was engaged on a station, at storekeeping, and at sawmilling, and since 1892 at farming. He was a member of the Timaru Harbour Board, South Canterbury Board of Works, and the Geraldine Road Board. He represented Pareora in Parliament from 1893 to 1896, and since 1896 he represented Timaru* until 1908. The late Mr Flatman was Deputy Chairman of Committees in 1906. He was defeated at last election for the Ashburton seat by Mr Nosworthy. Referring to the recent death of Mr Oliver Spurdle the Waitara Mail says:—Mi- Spurdle landed in New Plymouth in 1842, being then eleven years of age. Twelve years later Hie was married in the Congregational Church by the Rev. Mr Groube, and in 1867 the couple removed to Waitara, where Mr Spurdle carried on his business, for many years. He, with his wife, removed to Inglewood in 1896, and had since lived there. They celebrated their golden wedding in Inglewood nine years ago, when they were surrounded by children, grand-children, and great grand-children, besides other relatives and many friends. Another of the old colonists died on Saturday morning in Christchurch, in the person of Mi's Biusch. The deceased was born at Bristol, England, in 1838, and came out to New Zealand with her parents in the ship Prince of Wales, landing at Nelson in 1842. In 1857 she was married to Mr F. Busch, and four yea re later they removed to Marlborough, where they resided for sixteen years. In 1877, with her husband and family, she removed to North Canterbury, and she had resided there ever since. She leaA'es a husband and a family of six daughters' and three sons, all grown up.
