MASTERTON BULB SHOW.
A SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION.
The exhibition of spring flowers | given in the Y.M.C.A. Gymnasium, i Masterton, on 'Saturday, was. a clodded success, urid reflected the upmost credit upon, exhibitors, stagers, judges, and the Committee of Management;, which was ably led by the secretary (Mr H. M. Bodiington). There were no prizes or pecuniary inducemente offered 10 growers iby the Horticultural 'Society. Those who exhibited were the enthusiasts who grow flowers for ihe pure love of nature, and are \n\i jus for others to share in the beauty of the defighrtful flowers they lia.l ! grown and 'tended rwtiith such succe.se. Professional nurserymen \i*re represented! by Messrs F. Oooper and Co., Ltd., Wellington, <who had a collection of choice bulhs, heaths, cyclamens, anemonaes, hyacinth®, and golden tree daisies, over thirty in number, which were greatly admired. Mr E. Hale, of Lansdowne Nurseries,' Mas.ter.ton, had a collection of over fifty varieHlie® of narcissi and 'daffodils, including Campeirnille double, Duke of Albany, "Glory of Leiden, and other choice sorts. The largest private exhibitor was Mr Alfred Booth, of Hawarden, who had between. 500 and 600 blooms, with no less than 80 variedies of samlaß, medium and large trumpet narcissi, the 'most of (the latter sorts being prize takers at Wellington 'and other shows. The better quality exhibits had the names attached, (which was >a great advantage tto visitors.* Some of the most striking were "Lemon Queen," "Duke of Bedford," (a recent prize winner at the Butt Show), "Lord Btoberts" (a large trumpet never before showm in Wairarapa), "Mrs Oamim," "Glory of Leiden (a self yellow large trumpet), "Weardale Perfection" (large trumpet, and one of the best in. the . room), "Lucifer" (medium cup, w(hite perianth iand orange red cup centre), "Gloria Mamdi," (yellow perianth 'and deep orange red cup), "White Lady," (-white perianth and i white cup), "White Queen" (white 1 perianth with lemon cup), "King Alfred," (large trumpet). This par- ; ticular exhibit had been to Wellington show, ssmd although out a. fortnight back was looking beautiful and fresh. "Peter Barr," one of fthe best whiite daffodils in the room,, up to two years ago had never been .beaten for white trumpets. A larger variety has siince come out, named
"Uncle Robert." lit is satisfactory to know that large orders were booked on Saturday fry Mr E. Hale for many of his own and Mr Booth's finest, varieties of bulbs, Arid by Messrs' F. Cooper,' Ltd., for-;their collection. • This- should create, a large class of competWors next year; if a local 6how of bulbs'tis .held, v Notwithstanding the very fine coft lections shbwai by the ' professional growers, the tables of fhe private growers attracted the greatest interest. T. .Wood l , soine very fine -hyacinths from Mr J. F. Mauni&ell, Dr W. H. Hosking hyacinths and tulips, P. L. Boilings bulbs, Mrs J. C. Boddington narcissi, Mirs Trimble a howl of choice anemondes, Mr Cassin bulbs, Mrs H. E. .Moore bni-libs, Mr G. W. Sellar, a.
fine collection of cinerarias', primulas land ffreezias, pansies (21 varieties), cydomen, stocks 'and asparagus forms. TJie scholars of Taueru Scihool exhibited' a very creditable display of bulbs, wibicti were wellgoflown arid! nicely staged. In the competitions Dr W. -JL- Hos-
king took first in best collection foivariety, Mrs Morgan, second. ■ For quality Mr G. C; ; ■ Sumimiereil "secured first, Mrs C. A. Cameron second, Mrs A. E. Miles commended. There wiere very" good attendances botk an rtSn.6. afternoon, and evening. Members and [holders of family tickets were adimitited' free, and a nominal dharge of sixpence was made to nojMnemtbiers.
