UNIVERSITY FUNCTION.

(Received September 16, 8.5 a.m.)

LONDON, September 15. Lord Rosebery installed the Rector of St. Andrew's and reviewed the history of the University from barbarism, prevailing in Scotland 500 years ago, to to-day, when •there is some; danger of Scotland becoming a spoonfed nation. He emphasised the growth of toleration and the gradual •supersession of violence by law. When he iaveraged'tihe centuries, he was inclined to take a hopeful view of *he -future, and was persuaded that there was constant movement for the better in the world. Many foreign and overseas British universities and learned societies presented addresses. Otago University was represented by Professor Sale, and the University of New Zealand by Mr James Hay.
